A gas station clerk died of a heart attack after he chased a teenager accused of shoplifting from the store.
The Anderson County Coroner's Office says an autopsy performed Thursday showed that 53-year-old Manoj Chokshi died as the result of a heart attack Tuesday evening. But right before he died, he chased a 15-year old outside the store after the teenager allegedly stole three bottles of Mad Dog 20/20.
Anderson County Deputy Coroner Don McCown told News Channel 7's Rich Klindworth that the autopsy showed that two of Chokshi's arteries in his heart were 90-95 percent blocked and the stress to his heart was too much to take.
An official with the Williamston Police Department says they are still investigating whether or not the teen hit the victim; there were two people that said that he had. Meanwhile, McCown says at this point they can't 100 percent say that the altercation caused the heart attack, but due to his heart condition it is possible.
Captain Phillip Brown of the Williamston Police Department says he and the solicitors office are looking at the autopsy report and surveillance video to determine if the teen will face a stiffer penalty. Thus far, the teenager has only been charged with two counts of shoplifting.
At a scheduled hearing in Family Court Thursday afternoon, the teenager waived his right to appear and was transported to the Juvenile Detention Facility in Columbia.
Captain Brown says it will be next week before a decision is made on additional charges.
