ANDERSON — Officials expect to announce next month where residents in the area will be able to apply for one of more than 1,100 census-taker positions.

A local office of the U. S. Census Bureau will be in the city of Anderson, said Terry Plumb, spokesman for the Census Bureau Regional Office in Charlotte. The Anderson office will cover Abbeville, Anderson, Greenwood, Laurens, McCormick, Oconee and Pickens counties. The number of people hired will be based on the size of the area.

“Currently, we’ve had people out verifying addresses,” Plumb said. “In March, we will be sending out more than 250,000 surveys, or long forms, to some area residents. People who have not responded will be contacted either telephonically or in person.”

The number of people hired will depend upon how many people will need to be surveyed, he said.

South Carolina had the second-worst response rate in the country,” he said. “Some offices will hire more people than others based on the response rate. And the offices will try to hire people from the neighborhoods that they will be covering, so the response rate will be better.”

Plumb estimated that the agency would hire more than a million and a half people across the country.
