The South Carolina Highway Patrol is searching for a hit-and-run suspect after an early Saturday morning accident on Interstate 85 in Cherokee County.
The accident happened around 3:10 am on I-85 southbound at mile marker 92, about two miles north of Gaffney. Lance Cpl. Jeff Gaskins of the South Carolina Highway Patrol tells News Channel 7 that a 1999 Ford Pickup truck driven by 27-year old Jonathan Colon Rivera, of St. Joseph, Missouri, was headed southbound when he ran off the right side of the road, overcorrected, went into the median, struck the cable barriers and flipped several times.
Gaskins says three passengers in the truck with Rivera fled the scene and have not been located. Rivera, who was not wearing a seatbelt, wandered back onto the interstate, where he was struck by another car, described as a new model, dark sedan. Gaskins says that Rivera was transported to an unknown hospital with undisclosed injuries.
Gaskins says that the sedan suffered what they believe extensive damage to the right front end after striking Rivera.
If anyone has any information about the wreck and hit-and-run, they are asked to call Highway Patrol at 1-800-768-1504.
