ANDERSON — Furloughs are once again a likely possibility for Anderson County employees.
The county employs about 539 full time workers.
County officials are now expecting $259,694 less from the state.
That could mean furloughs, said interim county administrator Rusty Burns during a Tuesday council meeting.
The shortage from the state was the result of inaccurate information sent to counties by the State Budget and Control Board, which overestimated by $6.3 million the funds available for the state’s 46 counties. Each county is one quarter of the way through its budget year and will be forced to find a way to make up the shortage.
“We will be all right until the end of the year, but we may have to furlough (starting) in January,” Burns told council members during the meeting. “We’re going to have to ratchet down real, real hard to make it.”
Burns said that other options could be considered and a decision to furlough would not be made until Jan. 15.
He did not discuss details of a furlough plan during the council meeting.
Burns suggested a one-day-per-month furlough for most employees during spring and summer budget meetings, but other cuts were able to take furloughs off the table until late July when he said that state budget shortages meant that furloughs were a possibility
