COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina's governor is unlikely to get direct control of the state's health and environmental agency.
The State reported that a Senate subcommittee on Wednesday said it would remove a provision from a bill that would allow the governor to take control of the Department of Health and Environmental Control.
The panel heard only from DHEC director Earl Hunter, who opposes giving the governor control.
The subcommittee said it would meet Oct. 28 to vote on the stripped down bill.
Supporters of the original bill said giving the governor control of the agency would make it more accountable and less susceptible to political pressure.
Hopkins Sen. Darrell Jackson says he hasn't heard of serious problems at DHEC. Major business groups also oppose giving the governor control.
