Four years ago Tuesday, James Guy “Pete” Wells was killed in a parking lot near a grocery store in Anderson.
His death remains unsolved.
Anderson County sheriff’s investigator Andrew Tribble said Wells, 44, was probably robbed while he was walking to his car after leaving the Bamboo Garden Restaurant at the intersection of S.C. 28-Bypass and S.C. 81. Investigators found a black Atlanta Braves baseball cap and a necklace with a silver pendant at the crime scene.
Wells’ wife, Denise Wells, saw the shooting but was not injured.
“He approached my husband from behind and said something to him, but I couldn’t hear,” she told investigators the night of her husband’s death. “It was just a mumble. Then he shot him in the chest and my husband was trying to get in the car. That’s when he shot him in the head.”
She described the shooter as a black male, 6 feet tall, 200 pounds and wearing a white T-shirt with a black jacket and blue jeans.
On Thursday, Tribble said a $40,000 reward, offered by Anderson County Crime Stoppers and several private donors, is available for information leading to the arrest of the person or persons responsible for Wells’ death.
A billboard, donated by Fairway Outdoor Advertising, shows a photograph of Wells, provides information on the reward, and photographs of the baseball cap and necklace found at the scene.
The billboard is at the intersection of S.C. 28-Bypass and Flowe Road.
Tribble said anyone with any information relating to this investigation is asked to call the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office at (864) 332-5453 or Crime Stoppers at (864) 231-7867.
