ANDERSON — Sheriff’s Deputy Mark Gregory told a community meeting tonight that youth gangs in Anderson County are “a community problem, not just one group’s problems.”
Gregory, a member of the Anderson County’s Sheriff’s Gang Task Force, joined Sergeants Mike Clardy and Jeff Mosher in giving a 45-minute overview of the gang problem.
About 30 people attended the meeting at the Anderson County Museum. It was organized by a task force led by Anderson County Council woman Gracie Floyd, who hosted the event.
Gregory gave a presentation using PowerPoint slides, many of which showed gang graffiti, gang clothing, and in some cases, gang money confiscated by the Sheriff’s Task Force.
When Gregory asked the audience members if Anderson County has a gang problem, they answered with a firm “Yes.”
When he asked if gangs were in Anderson County schools, again the answer was “Yes.”
“Gangs should not be a normal part of our community,” he told the group. “However, if we let them continue to operate, to grow, and to recruit, they will become the norm, and our kids deserve better than to grow up in a place where gang activity is normal.”
