A candlelight vigil was held Thursday night in Oconee County to commemorate domestic violence awareness.
Over 100 people attended the vigil at the Oconee County courthouse in Walhalla to take part in the sixth annual event. The event was originally scheduled for outside, but due to the rain it was moved inside. The speakers and attendants honored victims who were able to escape domestic violence and those who were unable to.
"Every year it seems to make a difference in somebody's life," said Rhonda Morgan, a victim's advocate. "And usually by in the morning we will have phone calls from woman in the area who are wanting to know how to get help and that right there makes it all worthwhile if we can help one to get out of it and help her to be safe and to save her life, it makes the vigil all worthwhile."
In 2007, South Carolina ranked eighth in the United States for women killed by men. Of the 46 women killed, most knew their attackers and two-thirds were wives, ex-wives or girlfriends of their attacker.
On Wednesday, a 21-year old woman was stabbed and killed, allegedly by her husband, in Seneca.
