CANADYS, S.C. (AP) - Researchers at the College of Charleston say they're "fairly confident" that black particles found in six residential wells near a coal plant in Canadys are fine grains of coal.
The Post and Courier of Charleston asked the researchers to test the water in wells near the South Carolina Electric & Gas coal plant. So far, the investigation has identified six residential wells that have been affected.
An official with SCE&G questioned the validity of the tests but said the utility would test residents' water. Officials with Department of Health and Environmental Control said they would investigate.
Raw coal typically contains trace amounts of arsenic, cadmium and other toxic heavy metals. But it's unclear whether the particles are harmful if ingested. Researchers working with the newspaper said more tests are needed to answer that question.
