Governor Sanford Calls on Legislators to Fix Jobless System

Sanford repaying an expected $1 billion in federal loans with a tax increase on employers would be colossal mistake.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford says lawmakers should look at problems at the Employment Security Commission when they return to ensure more workers don't lose emergency jobless benefits.

Sanford opened a round-table discussion Tuesday on fixing problems tied to finding people jobs and how they are paid when out of work by laying out some goals for next week's meeting and next year's legislative session.

He says he's long encouraged an overhaul of the commission. That effort was sidelined in the House earlier this year. Sanford says changes at the commission are essential now.

He says repaying an expected $1 billion in federal loans with a tax increase on employers would be colossal mistake.
