The unemployment rate for the nation in September was 9.8%.
South Carolina's unemployment figure rose to 11.6% for September, which was up after two months of declines.
The Employment Security Commission reports the rate was up by two-tenths of a point from the revised number for August of 11.4%.

"Job growth in our state continues to struggle to keep up with job losses. As a result, the unemployment rate will remain high for the foreseeable future," said Roosevelt T. Halley, Executive Director of the Commission in a written statement.
South Carolina's job count increased by 2,500 in September with most of the increases occurring as state and local schools entered the first full month of the new school year.
The leisure and hospitality industry saw a decline of more than 11,000 jobs. There were also losses in manufacturing, construction and retail trade.
The job count - since the recession began in December, 2007 - is down by nearly 98,000 according to the ESC.
Union County has the highest unemployment rate in the Upstate at 20.6%, but that was down by a tenth of a point. Union county has the fourth highest number among South Carolina's 46 counties.
