ANDERSON — The Anderson City Council will discuss whether to approve a $60,210 contract for the demolition of 20 blighted houses at its meeting Monday.
J and J Specialties was one of seven companies that submitted bids for the work, a bid that was about $40,000 less than the next lowest bid on the list, according to city documents.
The demolitions are part of an ongoing program in Anderson to remove abandoned, unsightly houses from neighborhoods.
So far about 275 houses have been demolished through the demolition program. Originally, there were 50 homes on the list for being torn down in the city’s 2009-10 budget. That number was cut to help make up for part of the $730,000 shortfall in the budget.
The council will also give their final vote on whether to zone seven lots on McCully Street from multi-family residential to single-family residential. The non-profit developer, Nehemiah Corp., plans to build houses on those lots in an effort to improve that city block.
Council members will also give their final stamp on zoning a lot at 1621 N. Main Street to general commercial from light industrial. A building on the property is being renovated so it can house the Christ Reformed Church
