Anderson School District 1 Installs Light at Crosswalk Where Woman Killed

Duke Energy has installed a light at an intersection where a teaching assistant was killed and her daughter injured near Wren High School in Piedmont.

The Anderson County Coroner says Gretchen Randall, 46, died from her injuries after SCHP troopers say a car struck her and her daughter as they were leaving a homecoming football game at the high school.

Troopers told News Channel 7, the mother and daughter were in the crosswalk at the time headed back to their car when a driver hit both of them.

Kristen Randall, 15, suffered a broken ankle among her injuries, but was released from the hospital.

Anderson School District One Superintendent Dr. Wayne Fowler says a meeting was held with the South Carolina Department of Transportation to assess the crosswalks on Tuesday. SCDOT controls roads and sidewalks for the state.

Fowler says the SCDOT informed them the state didn't illuminate crosswalks and would not be able to provide funding for that intersection.

SCDOT did allow Anderson School District One to provide lighting in that area. Duke Energy installed a light on Wednesday according to Dr. Fowler.

Randall was a beloved teacher's assistant at Hunt Meadows Elementary School.

The school released a statement that read, "Mrs. Randall was a wonderful person. She was amazing with students and dearly loved by them.
Her passion for teaching was evident by the fact that she was currently working on her teaching certificate. We will miss her very much."

Randall's last status on her Facebook page reads, "Getting ready to watch some football! Wren homecoming!" Now her friends are leaving their grief stricken comments on the same website.

No charges have been filed against the driver.
