COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A plan to put the governor in charge of South Carolina's health and environmental agency has been revived by a Senate panel.
The State reported that a subcommittee voted Wednesday to create a Cabinet secretary position to run the Department of Health and Environmental Control. The same panel earlier this month had indicated it would remove gubernatorial control from a bill about the agency.
Some committee members say they had been contacted by conservation groups and others who want to put the governor in charge.
Many business leaders say DHEC has worked well in handling environmental permits and oppose giving the governor control.
The Senate Medical Affairs Committee will consider the idea in January.
