LOS CABOS, Mexico (AP) - Evacuation efforts continue on Mexico's
Baja California Peninsula as Hurricane Jimena looms.
The near-Category 5 storm packing winds over 155 miles per hour
is expected to hit later today. It's forced organizers of an
international financial meeting to move the session from Cabo San
Lucas inland to Mexico City.
Police, firefighters and navy personnel have been driving
through shantytowns, trying to persuade some 10,000 people to
evacuate shacks made of plastic sheeting, wood, reeds and even
blankets.
Some are reluctant to leave. They're afraid their few
possessions will be stolen if they do.
The government warns that those who refuse to evacuate would be
forced to do so.
