Woodruff City Clerk Fired; SLED Investigating "Discrepancies"

» 1 Comment | Post a Comment

The city of Woodruff has fired its longtime clerk/treasurer after an audit turned up what city officials describe as "discrepancies" regarding salaries for city employees.

State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is now investigating the matter upon request of the city.

Beverly Maddox, who held the position for 34 years and at times served as interim city manager, was terminated on Friday.

Woodruff city manager Stephen Steese issued the following statement:

“A result of an annual independent audit of the financial record
of the City of Woodruff, South Carolina, it was discovered that total
salaries exceeded the budget for the 2008-2009 fiscal year. Upon
further investigation, discrepancies have also been discovered for the
2006-2007 and 2007-2008 fiscal years. After receiving the result of
the audit and subsequent investigation by the auditors, the employment
of the city’s clerk/treasurer whose duty it was to enter and process
the payroll was terminated. The matter has been turned over to the
State Law Enforcement Division for South Carolina, which is now in the
process of conducting an independent investigation”.

Steese said he could not comment on the nature of the discrepancies at this time nor could he say which employee salaries were involved in the matter. He expects to say more once the SLED investigation is complete.

Maddox could not be reached for comment.
