An Oconee County is charged with assault and battery with intent to kill in a reported attack on her mother while the victim was sleeping.
Kelley Rose Smith was arrested in the incident on Monday at a home on Richey Road.
The Oconee County Sheriff's Office report says deputies found the victim lying on the front porch of a neighbor's home with her head, face, right arm and leg covered in blood.
The victim says Smith struck her twice in the head with a candlestick as she was sleeping on a couch at a home on Richey Road around 1:15am. The victim told authorities Smith had been threatening to kill her for the last two weeks.
The woman escaped the home after the attack and went to a neighbor's home to call for help.
Deputies say they arrested Smith at the home on Richey Road. The incident report says officers did not find the candlestick that the victim says was used in the attack.
Smith's mother spoke with News Channel 7 this afternoon and said Smith has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and has been in and out of treatment facilities for years. She said she blames the attack on the illness, and when the case goes to court she will ask the judge to send Smith to a long-term mental health treatment facility where she can get the help she needs without being a danger to others.
Smith was taken to Oconee Memorial Hospital for an evaluation before she was taken to the detention center. According to the Oconee County Detention Center, Smith's bond is set at $25,000 surety and she reamins in jail.
Smith's mother was also treated at the hospital.
