SUMTER, S.C. (AP) - U.S. Rep. John Spratt of South Carolina says he's willing to agree to tort reform as a way to cut health care costs.
The Democratic chairman of the House Budget Committee told nearly 500 people gathered in Sumter that including caps on how much juries can award in medical lawsuits would show that Congress
is serious about clamping down on costs. The father of two physicians says he could approve caps of around $500,000.
Spratt took questions and comments from several dozen people.
All but a few lived locally. Attendees had to write down their questions before entering, and a moderator drew names from boxes. There were a few disruptions, but the meeting was mostly civil.
The town hall was Spratt's first on health care since Congress took their annual break.
