WASHINGTON (AP) - Many Americans don't have much to celebrate this Labor Day as they find themselves unemployed.
AFL-CIO executive vice president Arlene Holt Baker says 50 million people have lost jobs since last Labor Day. She says the economy isn't working for many people.
Having helped elect the current president, labor is now pushing hard for health care reform and it's predicting passage of legislation to boost union membership and encourage collective bargaining.
President Barack Obama speaks on health care today to the annual AFL-CIO labor Day picnic in Ohio.
He'll also be announcing to union members that he's named a senior counselor for manufacturing policy.
