NEW YORK (AP) - A woman whose son died at the World Trade Center
is asking Americans to honor the memory of the victims through
"some kind of act of kindness in their memory."
The appeal came at the annual memorial ceremony in New York.
The anniversary was declared a day of service this year to honor
the spirit of those who rushed to the burning towers to save lives.
On a rainy morning in New York, volunteers joined relatives of
the victims at the World Trade Center site to read the names of
those who died. Four moments of silence were observed, at the
precise times the jetliners struck the north and south towers and
the time each tower fell.
In Shanksville, Pa., bells tolled for the 40 victims of the
fourth hijacked jetliner that crashed there eight years ago.
Obama calls on Americans to serve
WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama and his wife are among
the Americans doing community service work today.
Obama had urged Americans to mark the anniversary of the Sept.
11 attacks by volunteering.
After a ceremony at the Pentagon, the Obamas toured a Habitat
for Humanity housing development in Washington and painted a living
room.
At the Pentagon ceremony, Obama urged Americans to focus not on
the human capacity for evil or the desire to destroy, but on "the
impulse to save, and to serve, and to build."
He paid tribute to the men and women in uniform and "all those
who protect us" at home, and promised to "do everything in our
power to keep America safe."
Overheard radio communication briefly spooks capital
WASHINGTON (AP) - For a time today, a chain of errors on
television and online raised fears the nation's capital might be
under assault, almost eight years to the moment after the terrorist
attack on the Pentagon.
It started when CNN heard chatter from a training exercise over
a Coast Guard radio and reported that the Coast Guard had opened
fire on a suspicious vessel near ceremonies attended by President
Barack Obama.
CNN reported 10 shots had been fired, based on information it
heard over a police scanner. Anchor Heidi Collins played audio from
the scanner, with a man saying: "Stop your vessel" and "You will
be fired on."
The network also reported it on Twitter.
After the Reuters news agency reported what CNN was saying, Fox
News followed suit.
The false reports sent FBI agents to the scene and briefly
grounded some flights at Reagan National Airoport.
The Coast Guard isn't apologizing for the way it handled the
exercise, but says it will "take a good hard look at what we did
here today."
