All lanes of I-585 are back open after an early morning accident Friday.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol says a logging truck was traveling southbound on I-585 into Spartanburg when the logs on top of his truck struck the bridge at California Avenue. A dump truck came up behind and stopped and put on its hazard lights. A tanker truck came up behind and struck the dump truck and caught on fire, according to troopers. The dump truck driver and a passerby got the tanker truck driver out of the truck. Investigators tell News Channel 7 the tanker truck driver was airlifted to the Augusta Burn Center with serious burns.
The highway patrol identifed the following drivers as: logging truck Johnny Byrum from Westminster, dump truck: Joseph Tonkaga from Burnsville, NC, tanker truck Degrant Stevenson. Troopers are trying to determine where Stevenson is from. Stevenson was flown to the Joseph M. Still Burn Center in Augusta for treatment for his burns.
Investigators says the tanker truck was not loaded with fuel.
