JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - A man suspected of robbing 14 banks
in six states told a federal judge he wants to get back to
Tennessee to face charges of robbing two banks.
Chad Schaffner, 37, appeared in federal court Monday, two days
after he was arrested at a motel about 30 miles northeast of the
Missouri Capitol. A former Missouri Highway Patrol trooper
recognized Schaffner at a restaurant in Kingdom City after seeing
his picture on a news report about a bank robbery in Illinois.
In a 10-minute hearing, Schaffner said he has no attorney and
cannot afford one. He waived the right to a hearing to verify his
identity. Asked by reporters how he felt about being caught,
Schaffner only shrugged his shoulders.
Schaffner also is suspected of robbing banks in Indiana,
Kentucky and North and South Carolina.
The Missouri State Patrol Schaffner, wanted by the FBI for several bank robberies in the Southeast was arrested in Kingdom City, Missouri Saturday afternoon. The FBI in Kansas City, Missouri tells News Channel 7 the tip came from a retired Missouri State Patrol trooper who noticed the vehicle fitting the description of Schaffner’s at the Super 8 motel in Kingdom City. He went to the America's Most Wanted website and discovered the tag number matched the description for Chad Schaffner. Officers from the State Patrol and FBI made the arrest at the Super 8 Motel in Kingdom City where Schaffner was arrested without incident. Paul Reinch with the State Patrol told News Channel 7 Linda Goin, an acquaintance of Schaffner, called into the hotel room where Schaffner was and told him the place was surrounded. Goin has not been arrested but she is described by investigators as a person of interest.
Schaffner is being held on four charges:
Receiving stolen property-Clermont County, Ohio
Bank Robbery-Tennessee
Burglary/Theft-Indianapolis, Indiana
Armed Robbery-Jefferson County, Illinois
Schaffner was taken to Calloway County Jail on Saturday, where he is being held without bond. Authorities say they do not know which state Schaffner will be extradited to due to the large amount of charges pending against him. More charges may be coming.
