Burglars distract elderly women while 2nd person enters homes
Pickens County investigators are warning residents after getting several reports of burglars targeting the elderly. Below is a release from the Pickens County Sheriff's Office:
As a part of the effort to keep the residents of Pickens County informed, the Sheriff’s Office is issuing the following alert:
Between June 23rd and September 2nd 2009, the Sheriff’s Office received a number of reports in which elderly residents have been the victims of burglary and theft of medications. The perpetrators of these crimes have targeted elderly residents with a distraction technique in order for one of the perpetrators to gain a few moments of unnoticed access inside the residence.
Each of the victims has been approached by individuals described as “young and clean cut.” The perpetrators may begin by asking to speak with “the man of the house” or ask where he is, or when will he be home? The conversation then leads to some reason for the victim to come outside. The perpetrator may show an interest in the location of the victim’s property line. The victim may also be asked outside to have a photograph taken. While the victim is distracted outside, one of the perpetrators enters the residence for a few moments and commits the theft.
If you are approached in this manner, be aware that this type of criminal activity has been reported in Pickens County. Taking note of the vehicle description and license plate number is beneficial information for ongoing investigations.
Sheriff Stone says, “Always be aware of your surroundings. Be alert and never let a stranger into your home. We had rather you be on the safe side and, when confronted or in doubt of a situation, call 911 and get some assistance rather than be a victim.”
Please notify the Sheriff’s Office immediately if you experience any suspicious contact of this nature. The number is 864-898-5500 or call 911.
