Greenville Tech Bust Campus Officer For Stealing School Equipment

»  Comments | Post a Comment

On a typically quiet college campus, Chief Bobby Welborn isn't used to a lot of crime, until lately. "It makes you sick," the Greenville Tech chief says. His campus has been hit with several heists since July. Laptops, PC's, and overhead projectors have all turned up missing from school classrooms. "There's no forced entry into the rooms, somebody had to have a key," Welborn says. The last place he suspected that key to come from, though, was his own department. Welborn says it all added up with a tip he received recently from across the country. Shep Johnson, a computer expert in Dallas, Texas, was searching for a deal. He came across a computer on Ebay, and was immediately suspicious. Newschannel 7 interviewed Johnson by phone. He says, "If he had one computer, and it was like a garage sale that's one thing. But he had one computer, one or two laptops, a couple projectors. It kinda made me wonder, where is this guy getting them?"

According to the Chief, the seller was one of his own officers, David Graham. The school believes Graham lifted loot worth more than $10,000 over several months. When deputies served a search warrant on his Westminster home, they found the stolen goods. Newschannel 7 showed up at the home, but Graham had no comment.

Johnson is just glad he had a part in breaking the case. "It's like righting a wrong."

So far, Graham has been charged with posession of stolen property. He was released on bond from the Greenville Detention Center on Monday, and has been terminated as a Greenville Tech police officer. Chief Welborn says the investigation continues, and more charges could be coming.
