COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Employees of South Carolina's capital city won't be paid for most of their remaining holidays this fiscal year.
Multiple media outlets reported Tuesday that Columbia officials are forcing city employees to take unpaid leave for six of their eight remaining holidays.
Interim city manager Steve Gantt says the move saves the city $1.8 million in the 2009-10 budget, which ends June 30.
Employees will be paid only for being off Thanksgiving and Christmas days. City officials say they'll revisit the policy for the 2010-11 fiscal year.
