If there was any doubt as to Jackie Alford's patriotism, one look at her store would erase it.
"We salute those who serve for freedom's sake," Alford said. "I love my freedom and without the military, I couldn't have that freedom."
Even though she did not know Lance Cpl. Christopher Fowlkes, Alford appreciates the impact he had on her life and dedicated Wednesday to the fallen Marine who died last Friday after being critically wounded in Afghanistan.
"This is sad," Alford said. "I feel like I could cry right now. My heart's been heavy since Friday at 9:30 when I heard that he passed away."
Alford has been selling yellow ribbons faster than she can make them for others who showed up showing support as the young marine's body was returned home. The orders are pouring in for special flower arrangements, even though they may not be the happiest to make.
"When things like this happen, you're still a part of it being in the flower business."
Business from other strangers who just want to make sure the Fowles family knows they appreciate their sacrifice. It is that kind of connection that puts reminders on the outside of the building as a show of support for a fallen soldier, his family and an entire town.
"When you are in a small community, if you don't know Christopher, you know his uncle or you know his mother or you know his father," one person said. "It affects everyone."
