A local State Representative is expected to announce a defamation of character lawsuit Thursday, according to our coverage partners at the Spartanburg Herald-Journal.
State Rep. Rita Allison, R-Lyman, is expected to file the lawsuit over a letter that was sent to voters in her district. According to the report, a source familiar with the lawsuit said it would name "John Doe" as the defendant and would allow her attorney to subpoena witnesses and take depositions.
According to the Spartanburg Herald-Journal, a two-page anonymous letter was sent from Columbia last month and made a variety of accusations. The sender used stamps rather than a meter to send the letters, sources told the newspaper.
Allison is expected to announce the lawsuit at a Thursday morning news conference. Sources say that South Carolina Republican Party chairwoman Karen Floyd, South Carolina House Speaker Bobby Harrell and other Republican lawmakers will join Allison for the announcement.
Allison is in her sixth term representing Distrct 36.
