South Carolina Lt. Governor Andre Bauer said he would give Governor Mark Sanford until the end of October to resign.
Speaking in front of a group of senior citizens at a meeting in Anderson Thursday, Bauer said if Sanford does not step down, he would announce his intentions to run for Governor next fall. Should Sanford step down, Sanford says he would forego his plans to run for Governor and serve out the rest of Sanford's term and not seek re-election.
Sanford, who admitted to an extramarital affair in June, has already stated that he would not resign and instead wants to focus on issues involving South Carolinians. Earlier, Sanford rejected a offer by Bauer to resign and allow Bauer to serve out the remainder of the term.
Bauer told the Independent-Mail that he would give Sanford two months to accept the offer, but he intends on doing his job. "My job is a part-time position," Bauer said. "I've taken on the office on aging. I've taken a pay cut and put myself on furlough. I intend to continue to do the best that I can for this state."
