Two people have been confirmed dead after a plane crash on Lake Russell in Abbeville County.
Lt. Robert McCullough of the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources says that a single engine plane crashed on Lake Russell just around 11 am. McCullough says that Department of Natural Resources and multiple dive teams are the scene, just off of Harper's Ferry Road at English Creek Landing and Rocky River. He is unsure how many people may have been aboard the plane at the time of the crash.
Authorities tell News Channel 7 that the plane originated in Maryville, Tennessee, but its destination was not immediately known.
The plane is registered to James Clift of Knoxville, Tennessee. Investigators have not released the names of the victims. "My heart goes out to the people and the people's families," said a neighbor.
The FAA, Abbeville County Sheriff's Office, South Carolina Department of Natural Resources amd several fire departments were all at the scene. They were able to remove the wreckage from the water by Saturday evening.
Late Saturday night the Abbeville County Coroner identified the victims as 66-year old pilot Jimmy W. Cash of Maryville, TN. Authorities say his body was found in the water. The coroner says the passenger has been identified as Lance Justin Davis of Knoxville, TN. Authorities say his body was found in a seat in the plane. They say he was a reserve sheriff's deputy. The coroner says that both victims dead of blunt force trauma. An autopsy will be performed in Sundday morning. The F-A-A will be returning to scene of the crash on Sunday morning.
