Tracy Thornton cringes every time the phone rings at her Greer home. She said since April callers have been ringing her home thinking they are reaching Wells Fargo.
"It is frustrating for them because they really think we're calling them," said Thornton.
Thornton said every time a call came in to another home from Wells Fargo, a customer who dialed *69 would end up calling only the first seven digits on the caller ID.
"People are hitting redial or *69 and it's only dialing the first 7 digits and those are our telephone number," said Thornton.
Thornton said AT&T told her the only solution was to change her number. She wasn't willing to do that since she had the same one for 17 years. When she called Wells Fargo's executive office for help she couldn't get the answer she wanted.
"She said she was sorry it was our problem and they can't do anything about it," said Thornton.
The company was more than willing to help once 7 On Your Side inquired about her complaint. They immediately put a stop to the calls by changing the outbound toll free number they used that would show up on caller IS and suspended all calls into the 864 area code.
A spokesperson said, "We certainly did not anticipate the problems this person experienced. We can only imagine the frustration Ms. Thornton must have felt trying to find the source of the problem and get it resolved quickly. Hopefully, the actions we have taken will provide immediate relief."
Thankfully those calls finally will stop, but if they don't Tracy can count on 7 On Your Side to make sure they do.
"I am just so thankful that you did that," said Thornton. "The day you called me we had during dinner a lady call who blasted us out."
If you are getting unwanted calls check with your phone provider. You may be able to pay for a service that can block calls from a specific number so your phone doesn't even ring.
