A South Carolina film studio announced a new plan today to expand the movie industry in the state.

Genesis Studios in Columbia announced the creation of Emergent Films.

It will make two or three short films a year and one feature-length film as a way to teach local students about the film industry and give them hands-on experience.

It starts shooting its first short film this Friday in Columbia.

Even though it's training, the films are still expected to make money which will be re-invested in more movies.

Cliff Springs with emergent films said "Ultimately, it's a new industry. I mean, as it stands right now, filmmaking has a very select, very small crew base that's here in South Carolina. We want to create jobs. We want to create an opportunity where there can be more people that can get into this business."

The students will be from USC and Trident Tech.

They'll be taught by industry professionals who will also act as mentors.

South Carolina film commissioner Jeff Monks says the state has run into problems in the past when Hollywood makes movies here and there aren't enough local crew members.
