ATLANTA (AP) - New government data show drug-related deaths are
outnumbering deaths from motor vehicle crashes in a growing number
of states.
Crashes still cost more lives nationwide. But the death rates
for overdoses and other drug-induced fatalities surpassed the death
rates for crashes in 16 states in 2006. That was double the number
of states in 2003.
Drug overdoses make up the vast majority of the drug-related
deaths, and there was a sharp increase in fatalities tied to
cocaine, methadone and prescription painkillers like Vicodin and
OxyContin.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released a report
on drug deaths Wednesday.
