Coroner Rusty Clevenger identified the victim in a Greer hit and run fatality Thursday afternoon.
The man killed in the accident is Dewayne Keith Tweedell, 56, of Greer.
Troopers are looking for a dark colored sedan with possible front end damage after the Wednesday afternoon accident in Spartanburg County.
The wreck happened around 5:30 pm on Wade Hampton Blvd. at Biblebrook Road, just outside the Greer city limits. According to Lance Cpl. Bill Rhyne of the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the man was walking across the street with his dog when a dark colored vehicle struck the man, killing him and his dog.
A pair of witnesses at the scene were shocked and stunned at what they saw once the commotion was over.
"A car came from nowhere," said Gary Blanton, who was at work at the time and happened to look out of the window to see the incident unfold. "A dark sedan just hit him. It must have been going 70 or 80 miles per hour. It didn't stop. It just kept going."
Witnesses told News Channel 7's Beverly Tanner that the man was struck as he was leaving a gas station just down the road. As a matter of fact, Suzie Patel had just rang up his last item before it happened and said she could not believe how fast it all took place.
"This is very bad," said Patel. "Because, when he go out...and my daughter like puppies, she asked him, 'Can I walk with the puppy?' I said, 'No' cause I was busy at the time."
Even though the area was flooded with traffic and witnesses at the time of the accident, Lance Cpl. Bill Rhyne of the Highway Patrol said that the number of people with solid evidence is just not high.
"We do have several witnesses that stayed on scene," said Rhyne. "But like I say, in an accident like this, and a pedestrian is hit, you can understand when they saw the pedestrian get hit, their attention shifted toward the person."
Nonetheless, for many people like Blanton, the person should have stopped.
"He should have stopped," he said. "It would have been better if he would have stopped."
The vehicle is described a dark colored (dark blue or black), small to medium size and possibly a four door.
