AnMed Health Center needs blood donations of all types, specifically of A-postive and O types. Greg Johnson, AnMed's blood donor recruiter, said they typically like to have a three week supply of blood ready to go, but as of Thursday, they only have enough to last about a week.
Johnson said one donation generally takes about 30 minutes, including snacks and paperwork, but could save up to three lives because the donated blood is divided into different components to help different patients' needs.
Johnson said this is traditionally a slower time for blood donations because school has been out for summer so there have not been any student blood drives. However, he also says the economy has hurt donations as well: many businesses which in the past would schedule blood drives have now closed, and because other industries are trying to do more with less, workers have less time available to give.
The AnMed Health Blood Center is open 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Mon.-Fri. It's located at 600 N. Fant Street. For more information, call the center at (864) 512-1842.
