Former Jail Guard Placed On Probation For Inmate Assault

ROCK HILL, S.C. --

A former jail guard in South Carolina has been placed on probation for assaulting an inmate nearly two years ago.

The Herald of Rock Hill reported that 60-year-old Robert Cordell Martin of Smyrna pleaded no contest to a charge of aggravated assault and battery Tuesday in York.

Circuit Judge P. Brooks Goldsmith sentenced Martin to 18 months probation.

Martin originally was charged with second-degree sexual misconduct.

He was fired in 2008 after an investigation of an inmate's allegation of sexual misconduct. A Charlotte woman said Martin inappropriately touched her while she was in jail in October 2008.

Martin had worked as a guard since 2004.
