Something inside the Greenwood Post Office has forced workers to take the mail outside.
The Greenwood Main Post Office 240 North Creek Blvd. is closed due to air quality concerns, according to Greater South Carolina District Communications Coordinator Harry Spratlin.
A postal worker tells News Channel 7 says there has been an odor inside the post office on Cross Creek Blvd. for the past three weeks, but the odor has gotten worse over the past two weeks.
The postal worker says after being in the building, people develop headaches, dizziness and some have even complained of numbness.
The postal worker tells News Channel 7 that workers who have gone to the hospital, have been told by doctors that their lungs are inflamed.
Monday, the postal workers took their jobs outside. So far there is no word on what is causing the problem.
Spratlin says the 43rd civil support team from the SC national Guard is now on site to do testing to try to locate the source of whatever may be causing people to get ill.
He says this is being done out of "an abundance of caution" because of employees feeling ill and also because previous efforts to figure out what's in there haven't yielded results.
Box mail is being handed out to customers with ID in front of the building Monday.
Retail service will be provided at Magnolia Station 202 Magnolia Avenue.
Tuesday, August 31, PO Box customers for the Greenwood Main Post Office will receive their mail and window service at the Magnolia Station.
