SPARTANBURG - There will be a Red, White & Boom celebration in Spartanburg to celebrate the Fourth of July this year.
However, the Spartanburg Community College Foundation Board of Directors voted to end their participation in the annual celebration and fundraiser after 14 years.
The SCC Foundation says the costs to continue the event is higher than the revenue it generates. The City of Spartanburg will now take over responsibilities to host the festival.
Red, White & Boom has been Spartanburg's premiere event to celebrate Independence Day. It started as an event on the SCC campus in 1996 before growing into a celebration that attracted thousands of people to hear music and watch the fireworks display at Barnet Park downtown.
The event was a primary source of revenue for the SCC Foundation and Spartanburg Community College.
The board decided against staging a smaller version of Red, White & Boom. This event is being turned over to Spartanburg Special Events.
