Along the sidewalk of downtown Greenville, it's hard to miss what's missing on Main Street. "The head of the statue is gone!," says Jennilyn Howell. Built of bricks, the statue across from the Peace Center was not strong enough for a pair of vandals. Greenville Police caught the two on camera scoping out the statue, taking off the head, and then taking off with it. "It's fairly difficult to damage, but they seemed to do so," says Sgt. Jason Rampey with Greenville Police.
After going on a joy ride, investigators say the culprits came back, head in hand. "Maybe they thought if they returned it, it was like no harm no foul, but they've caused damage to the statue." With no estimate on the damage, the city is hoping to repair the piece of art. According to Rampey, they want the vandals to use their heads, and confess. "People talk, so these guys, it was funny at the time, and they talked to someone, and probably several people know about it."
