CHEROKEE COUNTY - A Lancaster man was charged by the Highway Patrol after a crash where he drove his car the wrong way on Interstate 85.
The accident happened at 9:50pm Tuesday on I-85 at the 88 mile marker in Cherokee County.
Ernest Robinson, 61, of Lancaster was driving a Honda Accord the wrong way on the interstate when he crashed into an SUV being driven by a Spartanburg woman. Robinson was suffering from a medical condition, according to Lance Corporal Josef Robinson of the SCHP.
Robinson says that Ernest Robinson became confused about which direction he was driving and struck the SUV head-on. Both drivers were wearing seat belts and were transported to local hospitals where they were treated and released.
Ernest Robinson has been cited with driving the wrong way.
Lisa Gerould was the driver of the car hit. "I thought he was actually on the other side of the highway going south, but he wasn't" she said. Gerould says she isn't surprised the driver became confused when he entered the wrong way. "I know a lot of people say its confusing by the outlet malls but the cracker barrel."
Traffic was backed up about half a mile because of the crash according to troopers.
