A lawsuit has been filed against the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind in Spartanburg, after a former student alleges he was sexually assaulted by another resident student at the school, during the 2007-2008 academic year. The suit claims school administrators did not do enough to stop the problem.
The former president of the school is also named in the suit.
The victim, is referenced as "John Doe", to protect his privacy as a victim of assault.
The suit claims, "Even after the report of the assault, nothing was done by SCSDB administrative staff to protect John Doe from future assaults."
Antwan Robinson, a resident student from 1998 through 2008, is the person accused of the assault in the suit. In February of 2008, the then 21-year-old Robinson of Rock Hill was charged with criminal sexual conduct in Spartanburg County, after he admitted the assault. Robinson is being held at Kirkland Prison in Columbia, serving a four year sentence.
In the wake of this incident, former President Pamela Shaw was released from the school.
Today, the School for the Deaf and the Blind released a statement to NewsChannel 7 on the lawsuit, simply saying, "Because litigation is underway and to protect the students' privacy rights, we cannot comment on this situation."
