BELTON, SC - A 72-year old Belton man died in an accident in Anderson County Sunday afternoon.
Cpl. Bryan McDougald of the South carolina Highway Patrol says the accident happened at 12:55 p.m. Sunday on Highway 413 at Horton Road. The Anderson County Coroner said 72-year-old James Grier was traveling eastbound when he went off the right side of the road, struck a tree and the SUV caught fire.
The victim was airlifted to Greenville Hospital System where he was pronounced dead.
News Channel 7's partners at the Anderson Independent-Mail spoke to 15-year old Dustin Younsey, of Iva, who was in a vehicle behind the SUV and witnessed the accident.
Younsey told the Independent-Mail that he saw the SUV traveling on Highway 413 when it crashed into a tree. Younsey said he called 911 and witnessed a woman wrap the victim in a blanket and carry him into a nearby ditch.
The Independent-Mail says that witnesses said the victim was driving about 55 miles per hour and was alive and able to talk after the crash. A pair of nearby residents said that there have been several near misses at the V-shaped location where the accident happened.
