Former Spartanburg County Clerk of Court Marc Kitchens pleaded not guilty in federal court Tuesday to a conspiracy charge involving drugs.
Kitchens, 42, made the plea in federal court in Greenville after he was arraigned. Kitchens is charged with conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine and cocaine by the U.S. Attorney.
Kitchens stole drugs from the evidence room at the Spartanburg County Courthouse according to acting U.S. Attorney Kevin McDonald. Kitchens is accused of conspiring with Terry Glenn Lanford, 53, of Woodruff to sell them in Florida.
Lanford arranged to sell the drugs to a man in Florida who was working undercover for the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.
Kitchens and Lanford face a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine.
Kitchens also faces a maximum ten years in prison and a fine of $250,000 for an official theft charge.
Kitchens' co-defendant, Terry Lanford, is scheduled for arraignment on February 25 at 10:00am in Greenville.
