February 16 Update
A soldier with a connection to the Upstate has died in Afghanistan.
26-year-old Army Seargent Jeremiah Wittman was killed in action on Saturday, says his wife Karyn Wittman. Karyn Wittman, 23, is a graduate of Boiling Springs High School. Their daughter Miah, named after her father, is 3-years-old.
Karyn said she and her daughter stayed with her mother in Chesnee while he was overseas. Karyn says Jeremiah, who she called Jeremy, deployed to Afghanistan in May. A year earlier, she says he was on a year and a half deployment to Iraq. Karyn says she was used to him being gone, but that she never expected it to be forever. Karyn says, "The three days before the incident he would text me and say, I'm going to call tomorrow. I'm going to call tomorrow, and of course, he was never able to call." But in the early morning hours before his death, he sent a text asking if Miah was still up so he could talk to her. Karyn says what she will miss most is him being there for their daughter who says, "Daddy is in heaven now."
Karyn told News Channel 7 her husband of four years liked to ride his dirtbike, hunt and grill. She says most of all he liked to spend time with his family, staying home watching movies on the weekend and spending time with their daughter.
The family isn't certain about plans for a memorial, but they hope to have a service sometime next week.
