The City of Greenville has had enough of repeat parking offenders. And we've learned some of the most serious violators have racked up thousands and thousands of tickets--and keep on offending.
This, while downtown businesses say they're losing money from those who continue to park illegally, day after day.
To combat the problem, the city is now increasing fines based on how many citations a driver has received.
Ten bucks more will be added to new tickets for repeat violators.
They say serious violators number in the hundreds--some have up to $3000 worth of citations. So, the only recourse the city has, is hurt violators in the wallet.
Dennis Garrett, General Manager of Parking for the City says, "We just looked at some (tickets) today--people have gotten as many as 40 tickets in one month," he said. He continued, "They pay their ticket, but they just keep violating and taking up the spaces."
The city says the violators are primarily a mix of downtown workers and residents.
The city is refusing to name names as to who those worst offenders are, until a Freedom Of Information Act request is made. We plan to do that, and will let you know what we further uncover.
