The Rutherford County Sheriff’s Department told News Channel 7 Thursday that two deputies were summoned to district court after being charged with assault.
The State Bureau of Investigation told us that Sgt. Roger Steve Reynolds was charged with obstruction of justice and assault inflicting serious injury. They also say Deputy Thomas Billy Short III is charged with assault inflicting serious injury.
The sheriff’s office says the deputies were not arrested and are not being held in jail. The office says no arrest warrant was issued.
The charges stem from an incident on Jan. 9, Noelle Talley, Public Information Officer for the North Carolina Department of Justice, says.
Robert Suttle II claims the officers charged used excessive force during his arrest in Jan.
Suttle was injured during the arrest at a home in Ellenboro. He suffered facial and head injuries. Suttle says officers used a TASER on him as well. He was treated at the Rutherford Hospital.
Suttle was arrested and charged with underage consumption of alcohol, resisting a public officer and assault on a government official/employee according to the Daily Courier.
Both Reynolds and Short have resigned.
