Residents in an Upstate community, as well as DHEC, are fearful, a dam may soon break, causing damage to potentially dozens and dozens of homes.
The homes are in the Chestnut Lake subdivision, near Chestnut Lake Drive and John Dodd Road in Spartanburg County.
The dam is located at the 35 acre lake that is in the subdivision. Residents say it’s a very old dam that is leaking and close to breaking. "No one should walk on it," says resident Kimberly Owens. "You never know when it might cave in. I'd hate for someone to lose their life."
DHEC confirms the dam is in immediate need of repair. Residents met with DHEC and local emergency management officials Thursday night to discuss their options. "It needs to be dealt with as soon as possible to avert a disaster," says Spartanburg Emergency Management Director Doug Bryson.
The pricetag for the fix is $30,000. With no federal or state funding, residents will have to foot the bill themselves. "My greatest fear is washing out the road, and the railroad," says resident Sherman Swofford. "If the railroad gets washed out, we're looking at a huge repair bill. That scares me to death." If the dam should break, civil responsibility would fall on the homeowners association.
