Three Southside High School basketball players have been suspended for Saturday's state playoff game against Keenan High School. The suspensions came on the heels of an afternoon meeting with the South Carolina High School League in Columbia.
Players and officials with both teams met with High School League President Jerome Singleton Friday afternoon.
Southside High School basketball players sat on one side of the meeting room with Abbeville's players on the other.
Neither spoke.
It was hard to imagine that these were same players caught on tape in an all out basketball brawl earlier this week.
The director for the South Carolina High School League spoke with a stern voice, not bothering to hide his disappointment and shame in each team.
Former South Carolina State head football coach Willie Jeffries spoke to the young men the importance of sportsmanship.
Afterwards Jeffries asked the players to shake hands. They exchanged hugs.
But that didn't mean the teams escaped punishment.
The SCHSL put both teams on warning status.
School officials in Abbeville on Thursday announced they were suspending eight of their players for five days.
