A spoof on Governor Sanford's affair is selling out seats at a Greenville Theater. "Sanford In Love", playing at the Cafe and Then Some, has crowds buzzing. "Just the title is bringing people in," says cast member Jim Wilkins. "That's great!" The cast says they hit the jackpot with this "real life" script. "The Governor's escapades were a gift," jokes Susan Smith.
Throughout the show, they cover it all: Sanford's trip to Argentina, his affair and his public apology. "It was so hilarious, we just had to come," says Becky Marlok, who has been to see "In Love" twice. Her husband, Ted, adds, "It's almost too easy, but it makes for great theater, great comedy!" On Cafe's stage, what many call a "black eye" for the state keeps the crowds coming back for more. Wilkins says Sanford's story is a real hit. "Our first night, opening night, we were sold out," he says. "That's never happened here."
Still, the cast says their popular play is not about politics, just poking fun. "Some shows we do, people think we lean too far certain ways," says Maureen Abdalla. "But this show, everybody laughs!"
"Sanford in Love" runs Wednesday through Saturday nights at 8:30 p.m. To purchase tickets, call (864) 232-CATS.
