Advice for Good Living from 104-year-old Spartanburg Resident

»  Comments | Post a Comment

As many of us look for a fresh start in the New Year, our health and fitness top the list. Who better to know what works than someone who is 104 years old? Spartanburg resident Frances Claus says sure, it's in the genes and by the grace of God, but she has a few things we can learn from too.

Born in 1905, these days she loves bowling with her senior team, The Tidybowlers, on the Wii. Claus says has always loved reading and working in her garden, and for most of her life, she says she’s walked faster than most people run. She says she's tried just about everything, even smoking - but just once! Claus says, “I thought, what's good about these things? I said “they are terrible”. To me they still stink…. I've tried just about everything - just about everything... (Laugh)!"

The caregivers at Eden Terrace Assisted Living and Memory Care where Claus lives say she is always positive and believes in clean living. Activities director Mary Valverde says, “She doesn't pay attention to her age, her weaknesses. If she is sick, she doesn't pay attention to that. I mean she comes every day to an exercise class."

Valverde shops for Mrs. Claus and says dark chocolate, prunes and grape juice are always on her shopping list. Claus, who turns 105 in April, says she grew up on black coffee and still drinks a lot of it!
