38-year-old Ronald Jermaine Epps, wanted for stealing a truck with a 10-month old baby inside, has turned himself in to deputies. Investigators have been talking to people that knew Epps over the past few days, urging them to get Epps to turn himself in. Epps is charged with kidnapping and grand larceny. He is currently being questioned by investigators at the Greenville Law Enforcement Center.
The theft happened Monday when the infant's grandmother left the truck running to go inside the Spinx station at 1520 S. Pleasantburg Drive. Investigators say video surveillance and witness accounts led them to Epps.
The grandmother who deputies say left the child in the truck while getting a cup of coffee says she was driving the infant around because she was fussy and not sleeping. Investigators also found the 1992 Oldsmobile Cutlass which was also believed to be stolen by Epps.
Law officers are trying to find a man who they said stole a pickup truck with a baby inside.
Greenville County Sheriff's Deputies said the abduction happened at a Spinx station at Interstate 85 and South Pleasantburg Drive around 1:30 a.m Monday.
The Greenville County Sheriff's incident report says a woman was driving her gradnddaughter in a 2006 Nissan Titan pickup truck early Monday morning because the child wouldn't sleep at home. The woman stopped at a Spinx gas station to get a cup of coffee.
Sgt. Jim McNeeley with GCSO said "thhe lady went in to get a cup of coffee, left the grandchild in the car due to the weather. While she was inside, a black male came up entered the car and left the parking lot and had a 10-month-old child in the back seat."
The incident report says the clerk at the station saw the suspect arrive at the business on a bicycle earlier and he had been loitering in the area for some time. The truck was gone and the truck was gone after the grandmother says she returned after five minutes inside the store.
Store survelliance video helped identify the suspect. Investigators say the man is seen on the video, but deputies can't identify him from the tape.
Officers found the 10-month old girl who was inside the truck dumped off at a home on Piedmont Highway a short time later.
The incident report says the suspect came to the door - with the child in a car seat - and knocked on the door. Bobby Jones answered the door and saw the man and baby. The suspect handed the baby to Jones and said he was with "the Sheriff's Department."
Jones called 911.
"I opened the door. He set the baby down right here and he asked me if I could call 911 because someone had dropped off the baby at the store," said Jones to News Channel 7. "I said sure I'll call 911. I turned around there to grab the phone, and he gets in the truck got here in the drive way and takes off", he said.
News Channel 7 got exclusive video of the parents bringing the baby out of the home where she was dropped off around three o'clock Monday morning. Deputies said the infant was in good condition.
Deputies say the man was wearing a puffy jacket and jogging pants. If you have information, call 911 or CrimeStoppers at 864-23-CRIME.
